We honor the men and women of the University of Illinois who made the supreme sacrifice as members of the U. S. Armed Forces during our nation’s wars and conflicts so that we may live and learn in freedom.
Alumni Association History & Traditions Committee
The University of Illinois Alumni Association's ad hoc History & Traditions Committee is composed of 24 Alumni Association Board members, alumni, emeritus or retired faculty and staff, and others who share an abiding love of and interest in the history and traditions of the University of Illinois. Alumni Association Board member Stephen C. Van Arsdell '72 BUS, '73 MAS BUS serves as the chair of the committee. Steve's Illinois legacy dates to the 1920s when his father, the late Prof. Paul M. Van Arsdell, Sr. '27 BUS, '29 MS LAS. '35 PHD LAS came to campus as an undergraduate and went on to earn a master's and a doctorate and become one of the Urbana-Champaign campus's most beloved faculty members.
Like Steve, each of the committee members has a special connection to the University of Illinois. They strongly believe that the preservation and interpretation of the University's rich history and traditions are the keys to link the cherished memories of the past with the present and to the institution's aspirations for the future. They epitomize the inscription at the base of Lorado Taft's Alma Mater statue, a gift to the University from its alumni, "To thy happy children of the future, those of the past send greetings."
